Gender inequality is something that is
sown deep into almost every single person we know. So much so, that most of us
have no flinches about representing all human beings, with a single term – man.
“He who is in haste, he makes waste”“Man
is a social animal” etc.– when we all very well know, that man does not
singularly constitute all of society as a whole. This thought has been
ingrained into every single action of ours, so deeply that many of us
subconsciously believe that man and woman, are not and cannot be equal. This is
what that has to change, not just for the betterment of society and human
beings – this has to change for the betterment of even all our families.
Feminism simply is the belief that
both men and women are equal in nature. A feminist hypocrite believes that
women deserve all benefits of being called ‘the weaker sex’ yet shout out that
men and women are equal. A male chauvinist believes that women cannot function
appropriately without the assistance or the help of man.
Most of us, are so ignorant that we
fail to notice that we are practicing propaganda for gender inequality in the
smallest of our actions. Something as simple as holding the door open, or
carrying their bags or even giving up seats for a woman are an outburst of the
ingrained belief that women have to be taken care of by men.
Look around you, and you will realise
that women are fully capable of taking care of themselves. So far, they have
taken up whatever responsibility that has been thrust at them, and have
excelled at it, without finding a need to compromise on what they believe in.
Some of you may find it difficult to
accept the fact, but yes, men and women are equally capable for any job that is
given to them. They are equally adept at providing for others as well as
carrying the burden of their family on their shoulders.
Yet, society still believes that
women are fragile and delicate – and hence have to be looked after by the brave
and bold men. It is no fault of an individual, as after all this is a society
that is constituted by a large number of men and a lesser number of women – who
all are unceasingly taught that men are meant to protect, and women are meant
to be submissive. This after all, is an effect similar to the monkeys in the cage , meaning, we believe that a woman is not equal to a man, without really
understanding why it is being said.
To tackle the problem is by
increasing sensitivity about the fact that a woman is as capable as a man to
work, live, support and be beneficial to the society. We all know of legendary
women and men who have proved to be successful in various walks of lives, yet
we fail to recognize both of us as equal in our own lives.
It is about time we come to realise
that all human beings are equal regardless of how different they are in terms
of their physical features. After all, it matters not what someone is born
as, but what they grow to be.”
